Dreaming about your future? You can make it!

My name is Jessica Lerner and I am a former young carer. I’m 29 years old and still a carer. I am a little sister to an older brother with cerebral palsy and epilepsy from birth. I am born in the northern part of Sweden and now I live in Stockholm, our capital city.

In 2010 I attended the Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. I studied Human Resource management for 3 years. During my second year I attended the University of Wyoming in the U.S. I really recommend you to study abroad during a period of time. In the end of Spring 2013 I graduated and ended up with my final degree. I really struggled with all these exams. But trust me, just don’t give up and dare to ask for help. Maybe you can look at other answers as well as older exams. Just to figure out how to work it all out. You can meet up with others and study together to discuss the lectures. You can record the lecture and then go back and listen to it again. You can also retell the information to one of your classmates. And if you can’t go to a lecture, you can ask someone else for their notes. Some people had a job beside their studies. I chose not to. Just because I really wanted to get the most out of being a student at the time.

Today I’m a public speaker talking about my own personal perspective as a sibling. I’ve been doing this since Spring 2017. I’m sharing my own experiences because I want to be the role model that I did not have when I grew up. I want to inspire and be there for other siblings as well as others in our society. I want to make a real difference for individuals and organizations around the world. I want to be a breeze of fresh air to breathe in. Hopefully you’ll get inspired by me and my personal journey. I’m also a member of the Eurocarers Young Carers Working Group and I’ve been a part of this group since the beginning. I am also a member of the User Board of Cerebral Palsy Follow-Up Program. At the same time I’m taking care of my older brother some times during the year.

Remember, don’t forget to have fun while doing this. Even if the person right next to you might be your boss one day. No pressure. Just kidding! Search for jobs you don’t think you can get. Don’t underestimate yourself. You might not end up with the job position, but at least you’ve tried. And maybe the company will get in contact with you later. This have happened
to me and some other people in my surrounding.

You know, you can be serious in life and still have fun at the same time. A lot of people have told me that I’m way too serious in life. So what?! It’s my life, I only live once and life is way too short to just throw away on something totally pointless. Right? You just have to find your own way to balance it all. To be serious in life, have fun while doing these things in life and to be total relaxed sometimes. Not just stay online. Have a movie night together with others, do something totally different or just go somewhere else for a while. Where you know you can recharge your own batteries.

May I ask, what is your dream job position for example related to the field of study? And why? At least think about it for a while. Talk to someone else about it, if you want to. Maybe this person will recruit you one day. You never know. Right? At least I think it is worth the try. Now, take care and good luck in life. And believe me when I say, you can make it.
